I’ve had this conversation more times than I can count, usually the week after a client’s dog slipped a collar at the dog park or bolted during a thunderstorm. The owner wants one answer: GPS tracker or microchip, which one do I actually need? The honest answer is that they’re not competing for the same job, and picking only one leaves a real gap in coverage.

A microchip, per the American Veterinary Medical Association, is a small implant about the size of a grain of rice, placed under the skin between the shoulder blades. The case for microchipping isn’t sentimental, it’s statistical. A GPS tracker’s entire job is shrinking the time between “he’s gone” and “here’s where he is.” That window matters. A dog loose near a road for ten minutes is a very different risk than a dog loose for six hours. Trackers vary a lot in refresh rate, battery life, and whether they rely on cell networks, Bluetooth, or a hybrid of both — and coverage gaps in rural areas or dense buildings can blunt real-world performance no matter what the box promises. So do you actually need both?

Short version: yes, for most dogs, and I don’t say that as a hedge. The microchip is cheap, permanent, and it’s the thing that closes the loop when a stranger finds your dog — it doesn’t degrade, doesn’t need charging, and works even if a collar comes off entirely. Where I’d push back on the “buy everything” instinct: if your dog has never once tried to bolt, is closely supervised, and lives somewhere fenced and low-risk, a tracker is a nice-to-have, not a must-have, and the subscription fee is a fair thing to skip.
