By six months to two years, the conditions that track with tight, closed gene pools start to become visible: allergic dermatitis, early cataracts, and orthopedic issues like elbow dysplasia. That’s the actual argument for hybrid vigor, and it’s a narrower one than the internet version: less inbreeding lowers the odds of inheriting two copies of the same harmful recessive gene, but it does not erase risk if both sides of a mixed-breed dog’s ancestry happen to carry the same mutation.
Flat-faced breeds complicate this further, because their risk is structural, not just genetic dilution. I once managed a 6-year-old Labrador-mix, about 70 pounds, whose owner first noticed she was reluctant to jump into the car on a Tuesday morning in early spring. No limping yet, just a hesitation at the tailgate that hadn’t been there the week before. I tell clients to weight the decision toward known lineage when it’s available, and toward genetic diversity as a general risk-lowering factor when it isn’t. That’s my actual recommendation: ask for health clearances on a purebred puppy’s parents whenever you can get them, and treat a mixed-breed dog’s unknown ancestry as a reason to screen a little more, not a reason to worry less. The counterargument I take seriously is that a genetically diverse dog can still inherit the exact same recessive condition from two unrelated carriers, so “mixed breed” is not a health guarantee on its own. Genetic diversity lowers the odds; it doesn’t rewrite them.
