First, rule out the fixable before you reach for a chew
Book the vet exam before you buy anything. A dog whose energy dropped noticeably after turning 8 is telling you something, and a NAD+ chew is the wrong first answer when the real problem is treatable. Ask for a senior workup: a thyroid panel, because hypothyroidism is common in middle-aged and older dogs and shows up as low energy, weight gain, and coat changes; a complete blood count to catch anemia; and an honest look at the arthritis pain that quietly keeps a stiff dog on the couch. Heart disease and dental pain hide behind “she’s just slowing down” too. Only after your veterinarian has cleared the treatable causes does a longevity supplement belong in the conversation, as a may-help-support adjunct rather than a substitute for a diagnosis.
That order matters most for the oldest patients, where a missed thyroid problem or an untreated sore joint costs weeks of comfort you cannot get back.
What a NAD+ precursor actually is, in plain terms
NAD+ is a coenzyme every cell uses to turn food into usable energy and to run its repair machinery. A precursor is simply the raw material the body converts into NAD+. The two you will see on canine labels are nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). Both feed the same pathway. NR crosses into cells through dedicated nucleoside transporters, while NMN is generally converted a step along the way before it gets used.
The pitch behind these chews is that NAD+ falls as animals age, so refilling the raw material might help. That premise is real but softer than the marketing suggests. A 2021 review in Nutrients found the decline is well documented in some tissues, such as skeletal muscle and parts of the brain and fat, yet inconsistent elsewhere and thin in humans. “The evidence to support such claims is very limited,” the authors wrote. Treat “NAD+ collapses at 8, so refill it” as a working hypothesis, not a settled fact.
What raising NAD+ has, and has not, been shown to do
Precursors do raise NAD+. In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 1,000 mg of NR daily lifted NAD+ in older adults’ blood cells by roughly 60% and was well tolerated across six weeks. Higher NAD+ is the mechanism. It is not the same thing as more spring on a morning walk.
The closest canine evidence comes from a 2024 randomized controlled trial in Scientific Reports, run at North Carolina State University in 70 senior dogs, testing a combination of a senolytic and an NAD+ precursor (the formula sold as Leap Years). Owners in the full-dose group reported meaningfully improved cognitive scores, with hints of better activity and lower frailty. Two caveats keep this honest. The product paired the precursor with a senolytic, so you cannot credit NR on its own; and dogs in every group, placebo included, improved, which is a plain reminder of how much routine and attention lift an old dog. So “her energy came back” is a reasonable hope, not a proven canine outcome for a precursor chew taken alone.
The other actives on the label
Most longevity chews stack in antioxidants. Resveratrol and quercetin turn up often, both studied for antioxidant and cellular-support roles, and neither is an unreasonable inclusion. The candid read is that their canine outcome data stay early, drawn mostly from laboratory and non-dog models, so weigh them as supporting cast rather than the reason a tired dog would perk up.
How to read the label before you buy
Once your vet is on board, shop the panel, not the packaging.
- Look for a disclosed precursor dose in milligrams per chew, not a proprietary “blend” that hides the amount.
- Choose the yellow NASC Quality Seal, which means the maker passed an independent third-party audit and reports adverse events, the closest thing this category has to a quality floor.
- Ask for a certificate of analysis (COA) confirming identity and purity. A company that tests its batches will hand one over.
- Match the chew to your dog’s weight, start at the low end, and watch for loose stool the first week.
Keeping comfort at the center
Set the goal plainly. A NAD+ precursor chew may help support cellular health as one piece of a senior plan that already includes pain control, restful sleep, gentle movement, and the vet-treatable diagnoses handled first. If a chew buys your 8-year-old a little more spark, treat that as a welcome bonus resting on top of the care that genuinely moves quality of life, never a replacement for it. Watch your own dog rather than the testimonials, and let comfort be the scoreboard.
