That number, not the species printed on the front of the bag, is the thing that predicts how much of it a dog’s gut can absorb intact enough to matter. Every “marine collagen is more bioavailable” claim currently circulating on pet TikTok is really a claim about molecular weight, and molecular weight depends on how the manufacturer hydrolyzed the raw material, not on which animal it came from.

The strongest canine evidence I’ve found comes from a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in PLOS One, which followed 31 dogs with naturally occurring osteoarthritis for 12 weeks. Dogs got either a bioactive collagen peptide (hydrolyzed to roughly 6 kilodaltons, sourced from porcine collagen, dosed at about 240 mg per kilogram of body weight daily), an omega-3-and-vitamin-E combination, or a placebo. The collagen peptide group showed a significant increase in peak vertical force and vertical impulse on force-plate gait analysis, meaning the dogs were genuinely bearing more weight on the affected limb, and their owners reported significantly better quality-of-life scores than the omega-3 group. The placebo group got worse over the same 12 weeks. This trial didn’t test marine or bovine collagen specifically. It tested a well-characterized porcine peptide at a known dose, which is exactly the kind of detail that matters more than the species on the label. A separate narrative review in the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition reached a similar conclusion across the broader literature: collagen hydrolysates show preliminary but real evidence for improved gait in dogs with osteoarthritis, while their effects on cartilage and inflammation biomarkers stay inconclusive.
Where the Marine Advantage Holds Up, and Where It’s Marketing
Marine collagen peptides are, on average, processed into a smaller size range than bovine peptides from the same manufacturer, and smaller peptides generally clear the gut wall faster. That part is genuine food chemistry. What’s not established, at least not in a dog-specific trial I could verify, is that this size difference translates into a meaningfully better joint or coat outcome for the animal eating it. The gap between “absorbs somewhat faster” and “works better” is exactly where a lot of the current marine-collagen marketing gets ahead of the evidence. If a dog has a known beef or dairy sensitivity, marine collagen is the more sensible pick on allergy grounds alone, unrelated to any bioavailability argument. If a dog has no protein sensitivities, the dose and the hydrolysis quality of the specific product matter more than the species it came from.
The Dog Whose Sourcing Actually Mattered
I’ve watched this play out differently in dogs with a documented protein-source sensitivity. One patient, a mixed-breed rescue with a history of chronic loose stool that improved dramatically on a novel-protein diet, started a bovine collagen chew her owner picked up at a big-box store without checking the ingredient panel against her food trial. For a dog with a suspected beef, dairy, or other mammalian-protein sensitivity, marine collagen is the more defensible default. For everyone else, the practical next step is reading the supplement facts panel for a real dose, not scrolling for a source claim, and bringing the product to your next visit if your dog is also being managed for joint disease so the dose can be checked against what they’re already on.
